Why Kodiak for Vehicle Restraints
What separates us from a general contractor
01
Repair Before Replace
A vehicle restraint that won’t engage doesn’t always need a full replacement. Worn hook mechanisms, failed hydraulic pumps, and faulty control panels are all repairable. We diagnose first and recommend replacement only when repair costs exceed 50-60% of a new unit.
02
Brand-Neutral. Parts-Stocked. No Upsell.
We sell and service Poweramp, Rite-Hite, Kelley, Serco, McGuire, APS, and Blue Giant restraint systems. We carry the parts that fail most often across these brands, and we recommend whatever restraint type fits your dock traffic and trailer mix.
03
35+ Years on Loading Docks
Kodiak has installed and repaired vehicle restraints since 1990. Our technicians know which hydraulic pumps fail first on high-cycle docks and which hook mechanisms hold up under heavy trailer turnover.
Types of Vehicle Restraints We Sell, Install & Service
Hydraulic restraints, automatic hook-style restraints, manual restraints, truck-positioned restraints, and wheel-based restraint systems — sold, installed, and serviced by Kodiak’s dock equipment technicians.
Hydraulic Vehicle Restraints
A hydraulic arm finds a trailer's rear impact guard (RIG) and locks onto it, holding continuous pressure for the length of the loading cycle. Kodiak installs and services Poweramp's hydraulic restraints, which locate the RIG automatically and apply firm, continuous pressure once engaged.
Request Service
Automatic (Non-Impact) Vehicle Restraints
One button secures the trailer — no driver or dock worker has to line anything up by hand. Kodiak installs Poweramp's non-impact restraints, which mount to a concrete drive approach or building foundation without cutting into the dock structure.
Request Service
Manual Vehicle Restraints
For docks with lighter, more predictable trailer traffic, a manual restraint costs less upfront and does the job. Kodiak installs Poweramp's manual restraint line, built for standard shipping and receiving docks.
Request Service
Truck-Positioned Restraints (TPR)
Rather than mounting to the dock face, a TPR mounts to the trailer itself, positioning and securing the rear impact guard automatically. That cuts the risk of premature trailer separation during loading and unloading — a common fit for facilities that rotate trailers through the same dock positions all day. Kodiak installs and services Poweramp's TPR line for exactly this kind of high-turnover dock.
Request Service
Wheel-Based Restraint Systems
Instead of engaging the rear impact guard, a wheel-based restraint locks the trailer's rear wheels in place. It's a common choice where RIG height or condition varies across a facility's trailer mix, or where a driver needs to see the restraint engage from the cab.
Request ServiceAbout Our Vehicle Restraint Service
Most general contractors treat a vehicle restraint like any other piece of dock hardware. It isn’t. A restraint that fails to hold a trailer in place during loading is a fall and crush hazard, and OSHA has cited facilities for exactly this failure.
Kodiak’s technicians have installed and repaired vehicle restraints for over 35 years. We know which hook mechanisms wear out fastest on high-cycle docks, which hydraulic seals need replacing before they leak, and how to wire a restraint-to-leveler interlock so the leveler can’t be lowered until the trailer is actually secured.
We sell, install, and service vehicle restraints at warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, and commercial facilities across Missouri and Illinois.
Kodiak works with Poweramp vehicle restraint systems and services all major restraint brands, including Rite-Hite, Kelley, Serco, McGuire, APS, and Blue Giant. For Poweramp equipment details, review the PowerHold hydraulic restraint, PowerHook automatic restraint, PowerStop Automatic, PowerStop Manual, and TPR truck-positioned restraint product PDFs.
Kodiak’s vehicle restraint maintenance covers hook or hydraulic arm inspection, hydraulic pump pressure testing, control panel checks, interlock wiring checks, warning light testing, mounting hardware inspection, and full engagement and release cycle testing.
Most facilities benefit from semi-annual restraint inspections. High-cycle distribution docks should inspect quarterly.
Vehicle Restraint Maintenance
A vehicle restraint sees a hard cycle every time a trailer pulls in or out, and a busy dock position can run through dozens of cycles a day. A hook mechanism or hydraulic seal that looks fine today can fail the next time a driver backs in too fast.
Industries That Depend on Vehicle Restraints

Common Vehicle Restraint Problems & Kodiak Fixes
These are the vehicle restraint problems Kodiak sees most often across commercial and industrial facilities, and how we fix them.
1. Restraint Won't Engage the Trailer
2. Restraint Engages but Won't Hold Under Load
3. Restraint Won't Release
4. Warning Lights Don't Match Actual Restraint Status
5. Restraint Corroding or Rusting Through
6. Restraint Doesn't Fit the Trailer Mix
Repair or Replace Your Vehicle Restraint?
A six-step decision process
1
How old is the restraint?
Vehicle restraints typically last 10 to 15 years with regular maintenance. Past that, hydraulic seals and hook mechanisms wear faster and start failing more often.
2
How often does it break down?
More than two repair calls a year on the same restraint means replacement starts making financial sense.
3
Does it match your current trailer mix?
A restraint type chosen for one kind of trailer traffic can become the wrong fit as your carrier mix changes. Repairing a restraint that’s fundamentally mismatched to your docks just delays the real fix.
4
Is the interlock still working?
A restraint with a broken or missing leveler interlock is a safety gap regardless of how well the restraint itself functions. That’s a repair priority, not a wait-and-see item.
5
What’s the corrosion or structural condition?
Surface rust is repairable. A mounting foundation that’s cracked or a hook body that’s structurally compromised usually isn’t worth chasing with parts.
6
Get Kodiak’s assessment.
We test engagement under load, check the interlock, and inspect the mounting foundation. Straight answer: repair it, or here’s what a new install costs.

Vehicle Restraint Brands We Sell, Install & Service
Kodiak is brand-neutral. We sell, install, and service vehicle restraints from every major manufacturer, and we don’t push one brand over another. The right restraint depends on your dock’s trailer traffic, RIG condition, and budget.

Vehicle Restraint FAQ
Answers to the most common vehicle restraint questions from facility managers, warehouse operators, and maintenance teams.
Or call us directly at 636-475-4222 – our team is available Monday-Friday and for emergencies 24/7.
We sell and install hydraulic restraints, automatic (non-impact) restraints, manual restraints, truck-positioned restraints (TPR), and wheel-based restraint systems. We work with Poweramp, Rite-Hite, Kelley, Serco, McGuire, APS, and Blue Giant.
We dispatch from our shop in Barnhart, MO. A technician may be able to arrive within 2 to 4 hours for facilities in the St. Louis metro area. For locations in Springfield, Jefferson City, or the Metro East, response times vary by distance.
A new manual restraint typically installs for $1,500 to $3,000. Automatic and hydraulic restraints run $3,000 to $6,000 installed, depending on the model and dock condition. Repair costs depend on what failed, a hook replacement is a different job than a full hydraulic pump rebuild. We provide an upfront quote before starting any work.
Both use a powered mechanism to lock onto the trailer's rear impact guard without requiring the driver to line anything up. Hydraulic restraints hold continuous pressure through the hydraulic system for the full loading cycle. Automatic restraints, like a hook-style unit, engage and lock in one motion at the push of a button. Most high-traffic commercial docks use one of these two types over manual restraints.
Wheel chocks alone don't prevent premature trailer separation, the trailer pulling away from the dock while a forklift is still on the trailer bed. A restraint engages the rear impact guard or wheels in a way that resists that pull-away force. Wheel chocks are a supplement to a proper restraint system, not a replacement for one.
It should. An interlocked system prevents the dock leveler from being lowered onto the trailer bed until the restraint confirms the trailer is secured, and prevents the restraint from releasing while the leveler is still deployed. Kodiak checks and wires this interlock on every restraint we install or service.
Semi-annually for standard commercial docks. Quarterly for high-cycle distribution docks running dozens of trailer changes a day. Regular inspection catches hook wear, hydraulic leaks, and interlock wiring faults before they cause a dock shutdown.
Most restraint problems, hook wear, hydraulic pump failure, control panel faults, corroded hardware, are repairable. Replacement makes more sense when the mounting foundation is cracked, the restraint no longer matches your trailer mix, or repair costs exceed 50-60% of a new unit.
A wheel-based restraint locks a trailer's rear wheels instead of engaging the rear impact guard. It works well for docks that see trailers with damaged, low, or non-standard RIGs, since it doesn't depend on the guard's condition. Kodiak installs wheel-based restraints as an alternative to hook and hydraulic-style units.
Yes. We offer scheduled maintenance programs for vehicle restraints, semi-annual for standard facilities, quarterly for high-cycle operations. Each visit includes hook or hydraulic arm inspection, control panel and interlock testing, warning light checks, and a full engagement test under load. Maintenance contracts reduce emergency calls and extend the working life of the equipment.
